Youmie is moving to Scaleway’s European cloud

In September 2026, Youmie switched from Microsoft Azure to the European cloud provider Scaleway. Our data was already stored in Europe; with this move, we are also transferring our hosting to a European company. In doing so, we are making a conscious choice in favour of European technology and greater independence.

Why we are taking this step

To ensure Youmie runs smoothly, securely and quickly, we use servers that store and process data behind the scenes for our apps, websites and membership administration. We rent the necessary computing power and storage from a specialist company: a cloud provider. Until recently, we used Microsoft Azure for this.

Every few years, we reassess which provider best meets Youmie’s needs, our customers’ requirements and our plans for the future. In doing so, we look beyond the country in which the servers are located. Under which country’s legislation does the provider operate? How dependent are we on that company’s technology? And how easily can we switch providers if we wish to do so? These questions are important to ensure we retain control over the systems behind Youmie.

Based on these considerations, we have chosen Scaleway, a European cloud provider with data centres in Europe. Scaleway emphasises control over your own data and systems, and technology that can also be used with other providers. This aligns with our desire to retain the freedom to choose where and how we run Youmie.

A lot of work that you don’t see

A migration like this requires careful preparation and extensive testing to ensure that our apps, websites and membership administration continue to function properly. We have carefully migrated all the clubs affiliated with Youmie to the new environment, one by one. We also amended the data processing agreement at the beginning of September 2026: in it, Microsoft Azure has been replaced by Scaleway.

Our colleagues have devoted a great deal of time and attention to this. Users may not notice much of it, but it is precisely this behind-the-scenes work that we are proud of. It lays the foundation on which we can continue to develop Youmie.

We also have ourselves tested by an independent body

In addition to our hosting options, we continue to invest in information security and independent audits. Our IT provider, Zooma, has been ISO 27001-certified, the international standard for information security.

We also have Youmie tested by external parties. Earlier this year, an external team carried out a penetration test : an investigation in which specialists attempt to identify security breaches. No critical vulnerabilities were found.

Clubs entrust us with their members’ data. This requires careful decisions, clear agreements and regular checks on how we protect that data.

What does this mean for our customers?

This switch will not result in any visible new features in the apps, websites or membership administration. For users, everything will continue to work as usual. The improvement is behind the scenes: we’re opting for a European cloud provider and retaining greater freedom to decide where and how we run Youmie. In this way, we’re also investing in the foundation on which we can continue to build new features.

For boards that need to explain where their members’ data is stored and processed, it also makes things simpler: on servers in Europe, with a European provider.
